The world's hunger for extreme sports and reality competitions has grown into reality TV bloodlust. Now, the most extreme racing competition has emerged and its contestants are murderous prisoners. Tricked-out cars, caged thugs and smoking-hot navigators combine to create a juggernaut series with bigger ratings than the Super Bowl.
The rules of the Death Race are simple: Win five events, and you're set free. Lose and you're road kill splashed across the Internet.
International action star Jason Statham leads the action-thriller's cast as three-time speedway champion Jensen Ames, an ex-con framed for a gruesome murder. Forced to don the mask of the mythical driver Frankenstein, a Death Race crowd favorite who seems impossible to kill, Ames is given an easy choice by Terminal Island's ruthless Warden Hennessey (Joan Allen): Suit up and drive or never see his little girl again.
His face hidden by a hideous mask, one convict will enter an insane three-day challenge in order to gain freedom. But to claim the prize, Ames must survive a gauntlet of the most vicious criminals—including nemesis Machine Gun Joe (Tyrese Gibson)—in the country's toughest prison. Trained by his coach (Ian McShane) to drive a monster Mustang V8 Fastback outfitted with 2 mounted mini-guns, flamethrowers and napalm, an innocent man will destroy everything in his path to win the most twisted spectator sport on Earth.

Tom Cruise cameo controversy
Stiller had intended to keep Cruise's role in the film a surprise, and he is not credited in the film. The film studio has refused to release pictures of Cruise's character as he appears in the movie. Images of Tom Cruise with a bald headpiece and in a fat suit appeared on Inside Edition in November 2007, and also appeared on the Internet. Cruise is reported to play a fat movie mogul in the film. Attorneys for Tom Cruise threatened a lawsuit if photos showing Cruise bald, bearded and wearing a fat suit were published. A representative for Cruise stated: "Mr Cruise's appearance was supposed to be a surprise for his fans worldwide. Paparazzi have ruined what should have been a fun discovery for moviegoers." Photo agency INF responded with a statement: "While these pictures were taken without breaking any criminal or civil laws, we've decided to pull them from circulation effective immediately." MTV News reported that "..reps are reportedly having the image of a fat, balding Cruise pulled from the Internet as quickly as sites can put it up". In an April 2008 interview with MTV News, Ben Stiller refused to discuss Tom Cruise's role in the film.

Dark Knight shoots to $400M mark in record time

Filed Under: Movie News Aug 2008 |0 commentsTuesday August 5 2:08 PM ET
Add another entry for "The Dark Knight" in Hollywood's record books: The Batman sequel has climbed past $400 million at the box office in just 18 days, the fastest pace ever, a studio executive said Tuesday.
As of Monday, "The Dark Knight" had taken in $400.04 million domestically, according to distributor Warner Bros.
Jeff Goldstein, general sales manager for Warner, said the film hit that mark in less than half the time it took for the previous record-holder, "Shrek 2," which crossed the $400 million level on its 43rd day of release.
That put "The Dark Knight" at No. 8 on the all-time box-office charts. It was poised to move up to No. 7 on Tuesday, passing the $403.7 million haul of the original "Spider-Man" to become the top-grossing comic-book adaptation ever.
Warner expects the film to pass the original "Star Wars" ($461 million) in about two weeks, making it No. 2 on the all-time domestic list behind "Titanic" ($600.8 million).
Even as "The Dark Knight" heads toward the $500 million mark, it will lag behind "Titanic" and "Star Wars" in terms of the number of tickets sold because admission prices are higher now. In today's dollars, the Batman film would have to take in about $900 million to match the number of tickets that "Titanic" sold.
"The Dark Knight" has earned wild acclaim from critics and fans, particularly for Heath Ledger's maniacal delivery as Batman enemy the Joker. Buzz for his role and the film reached a fever in the months after Ledger's death in January from an accidental prescription drug overdose.
The movie had a record opening weekend of $158.4 million.
"There's no question Heath Ledger's performance has made cinematic history. It's one of the most important or memorable villains ever," Goldstein said. "That added to it, but I think you have to look at a film in its entirety. It's the marvelous job the filmmakers and the actors did."

On May 23, 2008, Warner Bros. released the following plot summary for the film. The synopsis was modified on June 11, 2008:
Set in post-apocalyptic 2018, John Connor (Christian Bale), the man fated to be the leader of the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators, and the future he was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet's operations, where they find out a terrible secret that may lead to the possible annihilation of mankind.James Middleton, the associate producer of the film, stated the film "really about the birth of a new hero," and McG said that it will also be about the development of the Model 101 Terminator. He explained the film will "begin again very much in the spirit of what [Christopher] Nolan did with Batman," in that it will stand on its own without the original films and that it is "a bit of a sequel and a prequel because it tells the story of how we got there."

A tween-aged fly named Nat and his two best friends, I.Q. and Scooter, build a “fly-sized” rocket in a field across from Cape Canaveral, Florida, where the Apollo 11 sits on its launch pad. From his earliest memory, Nat remembers his grandfather, Amos, telling him of his daring rescue of Amelia Earhart as she crossed the Atlantic Ocean on her historic flight. Wanting to be an adventurer like his Grandpa, Nat knows what he has to do. Defying the notion that “Dreamers get swatted!” he tells his friends his plan to get aboard the Apollo 11 and go to the moon. His buddies, with some reluctance, are in. The next morning, as their families realize they are missing, the three flies make it to Space Center command. In their homemade space suits, Nat, I.Q. and Scooter stow away inside the space helmets of astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. As they blast off, our three tiny adventurers are about to make some history of their own.
Back on earth, Grandpa, Mom and the others watch TV to get news of their offspring’s adventure. As the astronauts appear on camera, the heroic flies wave in the background, visible to other flies but barely seen by humans – except for an attentive NASA team member, who informs Armstrong that there appear to be “contaminants” on board. One other problem: In far-away Russia, there are other flies watching TV - Russian flies that cannot tolerate American flies getting to the moon first. A Russian plan is hatched and operatives are enlisted to interfere with the US mission. Mother Russia puts all its hopes of success on the back of one nasty operative named Yegor. Fortunately, a pretty Russian fly named Nadia also sees the flies on board and hears Nat calling out his Grandpa’s name, the very name of the fly Nadia met in Paris and loved so many years ago.
Back on board the space ship, as the burn cycle to enter the moons orbit begins, the capsule starts to shake violently. There’s a short circuit in a control panel that must be fixed manually or the ship won’t be able to complete its mission. Nat and I.Q. fly through a maze of wires, find the problem and repair it just in time. Unaware of the flies’ aid, the ship enters orbit and all is well... or so they think. Just as they congratulate each other, the little flies are sprayed with a numbing aerosol and are captives in a test tube vial – contaminants indeed.
A screenshot of the filmThe flies manage to break the vial. Nat sneaks into Armstrong’s helmet just in the nick of time. The Lunar Module lands on the surface of the moon. From inside the helmet, Nat beams with every awe-inspiring historic step. I.Q. and Scooter join him on the surface inside Aldrin’s helmet. Back on earth, other plots are being set in motion. After more than 50 years apart, Nadia finds Grandpa, though the joy of their reunion is brief. She tells Grandpa and Nat’s Mom about the Russian plot to divert the mission to crash directly into Mount Rushmore. Yegor must be stopped. Nat’s Mom faints while Grandpa takes off with a renewed youthful vow to save his grandson. At Mission Control, the Russian operatives have infiltrated and are preparing to alter the descent codes. Unaware of the potential danger looming, the astronauts and the little flies sit back and prepare to come back home as heroes.
Grandpa, Nat’s Mom and Nadia join forces to stop Yegor and the Russian plan as Apollo 11 hurtles closer and closer toward earth. In a series of death-defying stunts, they crush the Russian threat. Apollo 11 splashes down safely in the Pacific Ocean, the world still totally unaware of the three little flies on board who made it all possible. Returning as heroes, the three little flies share a slogan embraced by all: “Adventure forever! Dreamers get swatted? Never!”

Universal's "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" bowed to an estimated $15.3 million on Friday, putting it ahead of the estimated $12.6 million earned by Warner Bros.' "The Dark Knight."
Playing in 3,759 locales, "Dragon Emperor's" haul marks the second highest opening day for the "Mummy" franchise behind 2001's "The Mummy Returns" which posted $23.4 million in its first day and $68.1 million over three-days.
"Dark Knight," however, remains a formidable opponent. Batman sequel declined just 46% in its third Friday on 4,266 for a cume of $363.7 million.
Sony's Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly comedy, "Step Brothers" fell 57% from its opening day a week ago, generating $5 million in third place from 3,094. Pic's cume through eight days currently stands at $51.7 million.

Star Wars : The Clone Wars - Behind the Scene
03:53
Filed Under: Star Wars: The Clone Wars |1 commentsAfter Star Wars: Episode III— Revenge of the Sith completed the tale of Anakin Skywalker’s tragic transformation into Darth Vader, not even George Lucas expected to see the ground-breaking space fantasy return to the big screen.
But good animation can prompt even the famously stubborn Lucas to change his mind, as director Dave Filoni discovered while screening footage from the upcoming animated TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars for his boss on a big screen. “That’s when, really early on, the idea struck George, and
he said the fans should really get the chance to see this on the big screen,” says Filoni, who quickly found himself directing the first Star Wars animated feature film on top of 22 half-hour episodes of a TV show.
Commentary
Catherine Winder(producer of the feature and executive producer of the series)
"It was a big leap of faith on behalf of the company to take this franchise and move it into the world of animation. It’s exciting, but hugely daunting because we want to do what’s best for the property."
“We really got to show him as a hero and as the good person he was, which I think, as George has always said, makes the downward spiral all that much more important and effective,” Filoni says.
Production and Influenced
Influences and Inspirations On the visual side, Filoni says his initial brief from Lucas was to make “something no one has ever seen before.” Finding that look began with sketches, and Filoni says he was influenced by his previous project, Avatar: The Last Airbender, as well as the look devised for the previous Clone Wars animated series by Genndy Tartakovsky.
“In 2D animation, we never have a problem with cloth and human characters. You can stylize the human characters in any way and it’s not much of a question, you just accept the look of it,” he says. “In 3D there are a whole bunch of challenges that I think everyone in that particular field is chasing all the time on how are we going to make something look and feel real.”
Translating the human characters into 3D animation was the most difficult task. “It was less about photorealism as much as let’s try to make a style, let’s try to come up with a visual look to the characters, who even though they’re not realistic, we’ll come to believe in them as characters in this stylized world,” Filoni says. Even before the feature fi lm was added to the schedule, Clone Wars was an ambitious project. Winder says she came to Lucas with the job of setting up the project with a never-before tried pipeline that had to produce animation of the highest quality at an affordable cost.
“It was trying to figure out how to put a team together and create something that no one has ever seen before, because if not, there’s no point in doing it,” she says. Winder, who has been a producer and executive with extensive experience in overseas operations, set up the feature and series with the front-end work including writing, storyboarding art direction and design done at Lucas film Animation’s Marin County studio.
The animation rendering involve Lucasfilm in Singapore and partner studio in Taiwan. The more spending time is hashing out the story in the 3D world with editorial. Marin studio incharge for asset builds, texturing and rigging in house, and the rest of rendering done by Singapore and Taiwan.
The most exciting part
For Filoni, Clone Wars’ most important contribution to Star Wars lore is Ahsoka. “Nobody knows what happens to her, so that’s been a particularly exciting character to work with,” he says.
