The Trouble with Romance

Presents a quartet of vignettes on a disparate group of Angelenos exploring the challenges and heartaches that come with falling and staying in love. Each story follows the inhabitants of different rooms in one hotel on the same evening. In the bathroom, a young woman looking for closure has an emotional conversation with her hallucination of an ex-lover, all while her new boyfriend waits behind the door. Down the hall, a husband and wife attempt to spice up their sex life, and a young man has his first encounter with a call girl.

The plot chronicles the romantic misadventures of several individuals in their twenties and thirties. The common thread is that one person in each relationship is more "into" the other person than vice versa. At the core of these multiple stories is Gigi (Ginnifer Goodwin), a young woman who repeatedly misinterprets the signs that men give her about their level of interest in her. The more experienced and romantically successful Alex (Justin Long), the manager of a bar, advises her on how to understand men.

Other plotlines include married couple Janine (Jennifer Connelly) and Ben (Bradley Cooper), who are going through a rough patch—leading him to flirt with Anna (Scarlett Johansson), an aspiring singer. Anna, in turn, is dating Connor (Kevin Connolly), but is clearly less into him than he is into her. The final major plot arc is Neil (Ben Affleck) and Beth's (Jennifer Aniston) story. They have cohabited for several years, but break up when Beth desires to get married and Neil refuses.

Drew Barrymore, one of the film's producers, is also featured as a newspaper editor who helps Connor promote his real-estate business.

Crossing Over is a film about immigrants of different nationalities struggling to achieve legal status in Los Angeles. The film deals with the border, document fraud, the asylum and green card process, work-site enforcement, naturalization, the office of counter terrorism and the clash of cultures. Crossing Over was written and directed by Wayne Kramer, himself an immigrant from South Africa. Wayne Kramer is editing it alongside Frank Marshall. The movie was filmed on location in Los Angeles in 2007.

The film was originally planned to have an Iranian character kill his sister in an honor killing, but the National Iranian American Council opposed this, saying that it was unrealistic and offensive, and it was removed.
